Ku-ring-gai set to get four public EV charging stations
Published on 20 December 2024
At its final meeting for 2024 Ku-ring-gai Council has given the green light to the planned installation of EV charging stations following community consultation.
The Council’s plan to install the four new charging stations comes as the result of a successful application for a first round of funding under the NSW Government’s Electric Vehicle Kerbside Charging grant program.
Under the program the Council has given in-principle support to a third party infrastructure provider EVIE Networks to install the charging stations. A formal agreement and further assessments will follow early next year.
The four proposed locations for the charging stations are:
- 9 Coonanbarra Road, Wahroonga
- 2-8 Turramurra Avenue and Gilroy Lane, Turramurra
- 1 Reading Avenue, East Killara
- 2 Lord Street, Roseville
All the nominated sites are on Council owned land.
In the last twelve months Council operated public charging stations have already opened at North Turramurra Recreation Area, Turramurra Library and the Ku-ring-gai Fitness & Aquatic Centre at West Pymble.
EV ownership across Sydney is steadily increasing, with the NSW Government estimating 440 charging stations are needed in Ku-ring-gai by the year 2030 to meet demand. Local EV ownership currently stands at 4.5%, with EV registrations doubling each year for the past five years. Ku-ring-gai has one of the highest rates of EV adoption in NSW.
Mayor Christine Kay said the four new charging stations would be installed at no cost to Council under the funding arrangement with the state government.
“Third-party EV chargers are an efficient way for Council to meet its transport electrification and Net Zero objectives”, she said.
Mayor Kay said the assessment process and negotiations with EVIE Networks would begin early next year, with the community notified before installation proceeds.
