Ku-ring-gai’s primary schools are being offered free boxes of fruit in return for encouraging students to ride to school on Friday 24 March.

Primary schools interested in participating in the free fruit giveaway must register their interest with Ku-ring-gai Council by Friday 3 March. Register here to receive the free fruit.

The fruit is being offered through the Council’s Smart Schools and road safety programs. Smarts Schools is an initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in local schools.

National Ride2School Day is an annual event aimed at getting primary and high school students out of cars and using alternative ways to travel to and from school.

More than 350,000 students across Australia are expected to join in this year’s Ride2School Day on 24 March by skating, riding bikes, using scooters or simply walking.

Schools are encouraged to register their participation on the Bicycle Network website.

Mayor Jeff Pettett said he hoped local primary schools would get involved and take up the Council’s offer of free fruit for their students.

“This is a way of strengthening the message to kids that healthy eating and being active go hand in hand.”

The Mayor added the Council was currently seeking community members to join its Active Transport Committee.

“This new committee will advise the Council on other ways to spread the alternative transport message.”
