Heating and cooling
Improve the comfort of your home with reverse cycle air-conditioners. The most energy-efficient combined heating/cooling system you can buy.
What can I do?
Heating and cooling use the largest amount of energy in your home, accounting for around 40% of household use.
Reverse-cycle air conditioning
This is an electrical climate-control system which provides heat as well as refrigerated cooling. Reverse-cycle air conditioning is 300–600% efficient, which means that it can take one unit of electrical energy and turn it into 3 to 6 times as much heating or cooling energy.
Maximise energy savings by:
- Choosing the right sized appliance for your needs.
- Setting your thermostat correctly. Each degree of extra heating/cooling increases consumption by 5-10%. Set the thermostat to 18-20°C in winter and 25-27°C in summer.
- Sealing around doors/windows with weather strips (flueless/open-flue gas heaters still require ventilation).
- Installing roof and wall insulation.
- Installing thick curtains.
- Double glazing should be assessed for cost vs energy savings.
Fans
Fans improve comfort levels so you feel about 3°C cooler. They are an efficient choice and cheap to run at only 2 cents per hour.
